French Wedding Boutis Circa 1825
French Wedding Boutis Circa 1825

These were traditionally for marriages so are best known as wedding boutis, popular in the South of France. The technique is very labor intensive. They would stitch the pattern they wanted creating channels through which they pulled cotton threads to fill the channel and make it raised. The larger “stuffed” flowers are filled similarly to our trapunto. The threads of the fabric are pulled apart from the back fabric, stuffed with cotton and then the threads are closed with a tiny stitch. There is the central medallion surrounded by a variety of borders. In each corner are urns of flowers with a feathered pattern going up the sides. This is truly a museum piece. Measures 56”x66”
