Red and Green Appliqued Coxcomb Quilt Documented Provenance Circa 1863

This wonderful quilt was made by Mrs. D. P. Highberger, west Pennsylvania. It measures 94” x 94”. This appliqued quilt is comprised of 16 large 17.5” x 17.5” appliqued blocks surrounded by an appliqued border of red and green pieces in an 11” wide border. Quilt has a paper label from the Mountain Mist Company as well as a label identifying the co-makers of this quilt.

Prominent Colors: Emerald green and solid red fabrics appliqued on a solid white background.

Fabric: Cotton. Batting: Possibly wool.

Construction Technique: All hand pieced, appliqued and quilted. Quilt is densely quilted at 10 stitches per inche with feathers and crosshatch designs.

Backing: White cotton backing.

Edge Finish: Separate green binding sewn on by hand to finish the quilt.

This quilt is in excellent condition and made with excellent precision. The applique work is exceptional and the quilt lays flat and square. The appique work, hand piecing and quilting are beautiful and create a very visual and clean quilt. It is in excellent condition with no rips, tears, stains or odors.

Provenance: Makers label is attached to the front of the quilt along with an “Honor” ribbon for paraticipation is a contest of some sort. There is also a paper label attached to the front of the quilt stating “Entry #35, Class A2, the Mountain Mist Exhibit Marker, The Sterns & Foster Co., Cincinnati, Ohio”.
