Antique French Bird and Fruit Toile circa 1830
Antique French Bird and Fruit Toile circa 1830
This is just a beautiful French toile fragment. The lower edge is scalloped and there are clear indications that this was previously quilted. From its size and the shape of the scallops I would guess it was part of a quilted bedcover. My research on this led me to the Mullhouse Museum of Printed Textiles web page where I learned that this toile was printed in Mullhouse and dates to 1830. It is a cotton and the color is a beautiful pinky red. There are so many wonderful elements in this motif: birds, fruit, eggs in the nest, baby chicks, butterflies and beautiful flowers. There are tiny pinpoint holes that indicate it was quilted. It is still a nice sturdy piece of fabric that could be sewn if you desired. It is also just great for the collector. It is not a common toile. The scallop edges do have some darkening which I’ve tried to show in the photographs. I did launder this so any color variations are likely to remain. This piece is 34” wide and 26” long. Please contact me if you have questions.
